Given the current COVID-19 pandemic and national and state declarations of emergency, Governor Whitmer and LARA Director, Orlene Hawks, recognize the critical need for current graduating medical students to be licensed as quickly as possible. As a result, the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) has updated the licensing guides for graduating MD/DO students and nurses in Michigan.

MD/DO Educational Limited License Guide:
Removed the previous language under 1d – Controlled Substance License which caused confusion for applicants and just noted that if the applicant will not be prescribing he/she does not need to apply for a CS license and provided clarification.

Temporary RN License Guide:
Added under Application and License Fee the following clarification:
Fee Clarification – $219.50 (Includes $10.70 for 1-year temporary license, once the licensee takes the NCLEX within the year and passes, the temporary license is automatically replaced with issuance of the Rn or LPN licenses which is $208.80. This is done so the temporary license holder does not have to back to BPL to apply for the full license).
Hardship Fee Waiver – Added a note that students applying for the temporary license who may have hardship in paying the full $219.50 may request a fee waiver. Please be aware that once the temporary license is received by the applicant that it is only good for one year and the licensee will need to apply for the full license prior the license expiration date and at the time of applying for the full license, the licensee will pay for the 2-year license.
