Pharmacists
Overview of the profession:
A pharmacist is a specialized healthcare professional who plays a crucial role in ensuring the safe and effective use of medications. They are experts in the science and clinical use of medications, including their composition, interactions, pharmacology, and side effects. In addition to dispensing prescriptions, pharmacists educate and inform patients and healthcare providers about medication selection, dosages, interactions, and side effects. Pharmacists can also write prescriptions (in limited cases), provide counseling, immunization, and disease prevention services, and monitor patients' health and progress to ensure safe medication use. Pharmacists must have a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited program and be licensed to practice in Michigan. They work in diverse work environments, ranging from the community, hospitals, and clinics to insurance, government, and drug R&D facilities. This multifaceted role makes pharmacists indispensable in ensuring that patients receive the best possible care.
