Detroit Wayne County Health Authority (AuthorityHealth) currently receives funding from HRSA to run a four-year psychiatry residency program. The goal of the psychiatry residency program is to produce board-certified psychiatrists to help meet the growing demand for psychiatric providers in Detroit, Wayne County and Michigan. Psychiatry residents develop a working understanding of the needs and problems of a low-income urban population with severe and chronic psychiatric distorders and multiple medical comorbidities. Psychiatry residents train in community mental health centers, a psychiatric hospital and in Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs). They also complete a two-year certificate program in Population Health and Equity from the Michigan Public Health Training Center. Graduates have been 100% successful in passing the specialty board examination in psychiatry. Since FY2013 the psychiatry residency program has received over $24 million in funding.
