In collaboration with the Michigan Department of Education (MDE), Michigan Health Council (MHC) is pleased to share a Career Navigator Guide for the social work profession. This guide is intended to be a resource for school counselors and other career professionals interested in helping high school students explore a career in social work.
"Social workers play a critical role in the healthcare workforce," said Aleysha Czartoszewski, Career Pathways Coordinator at MHC. "It's important that we find ways to support and grow the next generation of social work professionals."
According to MHC, social work is a growing and in-demand profession. Compared to the total Michigan economy, which is projected to grow 6% over the next ten years, social work is projected to grow 17%. With this increased demand, there are new opportunities for students and professionals to pursue or advance their careers in the social work field.
The guide includes four main sections:
Assess - where students can be prompted to determine whether their career interests are well-aligned with social work.
Explore - where students can explore whether social work is a good fit for them and what the educational pathway would look like.
Decide - a section dedicated to planning and logistics, including education programs and financial planning.
Go - final reminders and resources to provide students with as they begin their first steps toward a career in social work.
This guide is the first in a series of "Career Navigator Guides" intended to support and grow the next generation of healthcare professionals. An ADA-compliant version of the guide is set to be released in 2025 through MDE.
