New Leadership for the Michigan Action Coalition

Revitalized coalition will focus on transforming health care through nursing

OKEMOS, Mich. – The Michigan Action Coalition is pleased to announce that two new organizations will lead its efforts to improve health and health care for Michiganders: the Michigan Health Council and the Michigan Public Health Institute.

The Michigan Action Coalition is one of 51 Action Coalitions, which are working in every state and the District of Columbia in support of the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action. An initiative of AARP, the AARP Foundation and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), the Campaign is implementing the Institute of Medicine’s Future of Nursing recommendations to improve health and health care through nursing.

Located in Okemos, the Michigan Health Council is a non-profit organization committed to developing innovative products and services in order to build a culture of health with health care professionals at the heart of the delivery system. Melanie Brim, president and CEO, will represent the Michigan Health Council. She will be joined by Cynthia Cameron, PhD, chief program officer, who will represent the Michigan Public Health Institute (MPHI). Also headquartered in Okemos, MPHI aims to maximize positive health conditions in populations and communities through collaboration, scientific inquiry and applied expertise.

“We are thrilled to welcome the new leaders of the Michigan Action Coalition,” said Susan B. Hassmiller, PhD, RN, FAAN, senior adviser for nursing at RWJF and director of Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action. “The Campaign for Action is working at every level to build and sustain the changes necessary to improve health care for all Americans, and we know their contributions will be invaluable as they work to improve health and health care for the nearly 10 million residents of Michigan.”

“As a participant in the movement to maximize the contributions of the nurses who deliver health care in Michigan and nationwide, we are thrilled to bring our energy and ideas to this groundbreaking effort,” said Brim.

Cameron notes that the Michigan Action Coalition plans to focus on linking nursing and public health to contribute to building a strong culture of health in Michigan.

Action Coalitions comprised of nursing, other health care professionals, businesses, consumer advocates and other leaders are the driving force of the Campaign at the local and state levels. These coalitions of diverse stakeholders capture best practices, determine research needs, track lessons learned and identify replicable models.

“We are excited to see important leaders from public health leading the Michigan Action Coalition,” said Susan Reinhard, PhD, RN, FAAN, senior vice president of the AARP Public Policy Institute and chief strategist at CCNA. “We look to forward to seeing their progress as they work to improve health outcomes for patients, families, and communities.”
