The Michigan Health Council created the Building Michigan’s Healthcare Workforce Award to recognize Michigan’s healthcare organizations and educators who are designing and implementing creative approaches to recruit and retain a skilled and diverse healthcare workforce in Michigan.

2009 Building Michigan's Healthcare Workforce Awared Recipients

The Michigan Health Council created the Building Michigan’s Healthcare Workforce Award to recognize Michigan’s healthcare organizations and educators who are designing and implementing creative approaches to recruit and retain a skilled and diverse healthcare workforce in Michigan. The award recognizes innovative programs in five areas:

  • Regional Collaboration
  • Healthcare Workforce Recruitment
  • Healthcare Workforce Retention
  • Education and Training
  • Cultural Competency and Diversity

The 2009 Building Michigan’s Healthcare Workforce Award for Regional Collaboration was given to the Henry Ford Health System, Henry Ford Community College & Dearborn Public Schools for the Henry Ford Early College project.

The 2009 Building Michigan’s Healthcare Workforce Award for Recruitment was given to Northern Michigan Regional Hospital for developing a comprehensive physician recruitment program that addressed identifying patient needs with the intention of creating diversity within the medical staff.  From 2004-2009, 59 new medical providers were recruited to the Petoskey community.

The 2009 Building Michigan’s Healthcare Workforce Award for Workforce Retention was given to Oakwood Healthcare, Inc. for nurse retention efforts and also Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Foundation and Michigan State University College of Nursing for their Nursing for Life: RN Career Transition Program extend the lifespan of a nursing career by providing experienced nurses who may leave or retire from active nursing, with an educational program to prepare them for nursing roles in community settings.

The 2009 Building Michigan’s Healthcare Workforce Award for Education and Training was given to two groups.  The recipients are Beaumont Hospitals for their New Leaders program and Michigan State University – College of Osteopathic Medicine for their Statewide Campus System.  In 2008-2009, the MSU-COM Statewide Campus System consortium played a major role in recruiting the 953 Osteopathic physicians from outside the state who are now training in Michigan hospitals.

The 2009 Building Michigan’s Healthcare Workforce Award for Cultural Competency & Diversity was given to two hospital groups Beaumont Hospitals and St. Joseph Mercy Health System.
